The Center for Sacramento History (CSH) is accepting applications for two paid, temporary, part-time positions - an Archives Inventory Assistant and an Artifact Inventory Assistant.  Applicants must be currently-enrolled graduate students, or recent master’s-level or above graduates (Spring 2017 semester), interested in pursuing a career in the museum, archival, or public history field.  CSH is currently performing a total inventory of its collections, and seeks interested applicants to assist with this project.  Please see the information below for position descriptions, required skills, and how to apply.

Archives Inventory Assistant

The Center for Sacramento History (CSH) is accepting applications for a paid, temporary, part-time position intended to provide practical archival collections experience to currently-enrolled graduate students interested in pursuing a career in the archives or public history field. CSH is currently performing a total inventory of its collections, and seeks interested applicants to assist with this project.

CSH is the official repository for the archival records of the City and County of Sacramento. CSH also maintains privately donated archival material and museum collections documenting the lives and activities of the residents of the Sacramento region.

Position Description

  • The Archives Inventory Assistant will support CSH staff with a comprehensive inventory of the Center’s archival collections. The Archives Inventory Assistant will coordinate interns and volunteers with inventorying and describing archival collections materials, taking a role as team lead. 
  • With input from the Project Registrar and Archival staff, the Archives Inventory Assistant will identify work flow patterns of the archival inventory team.
  • Responsibilities related to this project include material and record handling, discovery of collection access points, locating holdings in collections storage, data entry using Microsoft Excel and the Center’s digital databases (PastPerfect Museum Software and ArchivesSpace), rehousing and describing collections, and other tasks as assigned.
  • The Archives Inventory Assistant will gain first-hand knowledge of how archival collections are cared for and managed, and will work closely with a wide range of materials.
  • The Archives Inventory Assistant will report to the Project Registrar, and work closely with the Center’s Archival staff.
  • Inventory Assistants will be required to work 20 hours per week, Monday through Wednesday, between 8:00 am – 5:00pm.
  • The expected start date is June 5, 2017 with a required commitment through August 31, 2017, though this may be extended through December 2017.
  • Rate: $12.00/hour.
  • NOTE: Unpaid internships will also be available for graduate students not selected for, or interested in, the Inventory Assistant position. See the CSH website for more information on internships.

Experience and Skills

Qualified applicants will:

  • Be currently-enrolled, degree-seeking graduate students or recent master’s-level or above graduates (Spring 2017 semester). Students will be able to earn credit towards school internship requirements through this position if they so choose.
  • Possess the ability to work independently and on a team, give instructions by communicating clearly and effectively, work on multiple tasks at one time, be detail-oriented and well-organized.
  • Have experience with processing archival collections and creating DACS-compliant descriptive guides
  • Be comfortable using Microsoft Office 365 and other workplace-related software.
  • Be required to stand for extended periods of time, climb ladders, access storage locations while on raised platforms, operate pallet-jacks and carts, lift items up to 40 lbs., and possess manual dexterity.
  • Have reliable transportation to the Center.

Artifact Inventory Assistant

CSH collects and maintains artifact and archival collections documenting the lives and activities of the residents of the Sacramento region. CSH is also the official repository for the archival records of the City and County of Sacramento.

  • The Artifact Inventory Assistant will report to the Project Registrar, and work closely with the Center’s Curatorial staff.
  • Inventory Assistants will be required to work 20 hours per week, Monday through Wednesday, between 8:00 am – 5:00pm.
