Employment Opportunities

The Center for Sacramento History (CSH) is accepting applications for four paid, temporary, part-time positions - two Archives Inventory Assistants and two Artifact Inventory Assistants.  Applicants must be currently-enrolled graduate students, interested in pursuing a career in the museum, archival, or public history field.  CSH is currently performing a total inventory of its collections, and seeks interested applicants to assist with this project.  Please see the information below for position descriptions, required skills, and how to apply.

Archives Inventory Assistant

Position Description

  • The Archives Inventory Assistant(s) will support CSH staff with a comprehensive inventory of the Center’s archival collections. The Archives Inventory Assistant(s) will document baseline information for archival materials in storage and may perform minimal processing of collections.
  • Responsibilities related to this project include material and record handling, discovery of collection access points, locating holdings in collections storage, data entry using Microsoft Excel and the Center’s digital databases (PastPerfect Museum Software and ArchivesSpace), rehousing and describing collections, and other tasks as assigned.
  • The Archives Inventory Assistant(s) will gain first-hand knowledge of how archival collections are cared for and managed, and will work closely with a wide range of materials.
  • The Archives Inventory Assistant(s) will report to the Project Registrar, and work closely with the Center’s Archival staff.
  • Inventory Assistants will be required to work 20 hours per week, Monday through Wednesday, between 8:00 am – 5:00pm.
  • The expected start date is September 5, 2017. The contract end date is December 31, 2017.
  • Rate: $15.00/hour.
  • NOTE: Unpaid internships, either with the Inventory Project or other assignments, are also available for graduate students. See the CSH website for more information on internships.

Experience and Skills

Qualified applicants will:

  • Be currently-enrolled, degree-seeking graduate students. Students will be able to earn credit towards school internship requirements through this position if they so choose.
  • Possess the ability to work independently and on a team, communicate clearly and effectively, work on multiple tasks at one time, be detail-oriented and well-organized.
  • Have experience processing archival collections and creating DACS-compliant descriptive guides.
  • Be comfortable using Microsoft Office 365 (Excel preferred) and other workplace-related software.
  • Be required to stand for extended periods of time, climb ladders, access storage locations while on raised platforms, operate pallet-jacks and carts, lift items up to 40 lbs., and possess manual dexterity.
  • Have reliable transportation to the Center.

Artifact Inventory Assistant

Position Description

    • Responsibilities related to this project include object and record handling, locating artifacts in collections storage, data entry using Microsoft Excel and the Center’s digital database (PastPerfect Museum Software), minimal rehousing of objects, photography, and other tasks as assigned.
    • The Artifact Inventory Assistant(s) will gain first-hand knowledge of how museum collections are cared for and managed, and will work closely with a wide range of objects.
    • The Artifact Inventory Assistant(s) will report to the Project Registrar, and work closely with the Center’s Curatorial staff.
    • Inventory Assistants will be required to work 20 hours per week, Monday through Wednesday, between 8:00 am – 5:00pm.
