Sacramento Archives Crawl LogoIn celebration of National Archives Month, archives and special collections libraries from throughout the region will open their doors to the public and showcase their rarely seen holdings during the 9th Annual Sacramento Archives Crawl. This year's theme is  “Preserving the Struggle: Archives and Activism.”

Historic treasures from more than 20 Northern California institutions will be on display at four downtown host locations: the California State Archives, the California State Library, the Center for Sacramento History, and the Sacramento Public Library. Free bus transportation is provided between all four locations.

At the host sites, the public can view archival collections on display and take behind-the-scenes tours. Representatives from other archives and special collections libraries will be at the host locations to discuss their archival collections - historic photographs, rare books, historic artifacts - and answer questions about how to connect with local history resources.

Archives Crawl Passports will be given to guests as they visit the host institutions. The passport provides a map of the event and information about the participating institutions - get your passport stamped at three of the four host sites and you'll get a set of limited-edition commemorative coasters that feature archival images representing the "Preserving the Struggle" theme. Crawlers can also participate in a history scavenger hunt for a chance to win fun prizes, like a hot air balloon ride or Samsung Chromebooks!

Faces and Places of Sacramento

Reviewing and selecting the photographs In 2007, the Center for Sacramento History began a city-wide community photographic collection program called Faces and Places of Sacramento (pdf), which seeks to document the historical, political, and cultural life of the Sacramento region. Center staff and volunteers, along with professional photographers, set up events in community centers where Sacramentans were asked to bring family albums and photograph collections to be copied. The selected images were then photographed, creating a copy negative, which was then archived as a permanent part of the Center’s collections. By collecting and preserving photographs from the people who have lived, worked, and played in Sacramento, the Center enhances its permanent photographic collections for the enjoyment and education of present and future generations.

Photographer copying the photographs Faces and Places of Sacramento is an ongoing project funded by the Mayor and City Council. The Center has held four events in four different City Council Districts with great success:

District 6 — June 30, 2007 at the Coloma Community Center
District 3 — September 15, 2007 at the E.M. Hart Multipurpose Senior Center
District 2 — November 17, 2007 at the Joe Mims, Jr. Hagginwood Community Center
District 4 — March 7, 2009 at Fairytale Town

Cataloging the photographs Over eight hundred new photographic images have been added to the Center's permanent collections from the previous events. Many of these images can be viewed through CSH’s online catalog; use the phrase "Faces and Places of Sacramento" when conducting your search.

Plans are in the works for events in the remaining districts as funding allows. Stay tuned for announcements about future events.
